WENZL of Moon Hooch discussed his new single “Higher” and a forthcoming concert in Brooklyn, New York, scheduled for August 23rd.
How did “Higher” come together?
The birth of “Higher” is nothing short of remarkable.
- A Nigerian vocalist, Sunkanmi, shared a brief voice clip months ago.
- Snoop Dogg reposted the clip, sparking wider attention.
- WENZL’s manager suggested transforming it into an EDM/Afrobeats track, featuring a saxophone hook.
- Upon beginning the production, the sax melody emerged—an unexpected, almost mystical voice that felt like it was channeling an unseen community.
Meeting Sunkanmi in Lagos
Six months later, the UK-based record label 3Beat signed the track and dispatched WENZL to Lagos to collaborate with Sunkanmi and her crew.
- Upon arrival, Sunkanmi met him at the airport with dancers, and they launched spontaneous dance parties throughout the city.
- Even though some neighborhoods felt intimidating at first, the music transformed skeptics into smiling, dancing crowds.
- Video footage captured from these scenes will soon be shared with the wider world.
Music & Songwriting Inspiration
WENZL’s background as a trained jazz musician turned DJ and EDM producer shapes his creative process.
He is drawn to jazz’s spiritual dimension—entering a mental space that allows music to flow freely in real time. That same mindset is applied to his EDM productions.
He opposes the polish and formula of contemporary EDM, striving to preserve spontaneity and emotional depth so the music feels alive and immediate.
Brooklyn Show – August 23rd
With a career spanning 14 years of underground warehouse parties, hosting over 3,000 gigs worldwide, WENZL returned to his roots for this Brooklyn event.
- He intends to deliver raw energy and creative freedom.
- Custom lighting will feature mirrored surfaces that bounce beams across walls.
- Live saxophone performances over house rhythms with an experimental, artsy twist will create a multi-sensory experience.
Future Directions
Currently collaborating in Nigeria with Sunkanmi, WENZL is producing content and new tracks together.
He aims to push his sound into unexplored genres, integrate diverse cultural influences, and synthesize them within his EDM sets.
Regardless of sonic experimentation, the ultimate goal remains to make people move.
Being an Artist in the Digital Age
Digital platforms grant unprecedented reach—from a bedroom studio to millions of listeners.
However, saturation intensifies competition, and the pressure to constantly produce additional content can feel overwhelming.
Despite these challenges, the opportunity to connect directly with fans is truly exciting.
Advice for Emerging Artists
Emphasize the process over the outcome. Consistent creation—songs, ideas, content—already reflects success.
Do not chase metrics; instead, welcome the journey, cherish every moment, and recognize that each phase is unique and sacred.
