Trump-Putin meeting set for \’coming days\’, venue confirmed: Kremlin

Trump and Putin to Hold Summit in Upcoming Days
According to the Kremlin, Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are slated to meet in the coming days, with the two sides having already agreed on the venue “in principle.”
First Meeting Since Biden‑Putin Summit
- It will be the first summit between sitting U.S. and Russian presidents since Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in June 2021.
- Trump is working to broker an end to Russia’s assault on Ukraine.
Table Talks Fail to Yield Ceasefire
Three rounds of direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv have stalled, with both sides far apart in their demands for a ceasefire after more than three years of conflict.
Trump Signals Imminent Face‑to‑Face Meeting
Trump said Wednesday he was likely to meet Putin “very soon.”
Kremlin Acknowledges “In Principle” Agreement
- Yuri Ushakov, a Kremlin aide, said an agreement has been reached “in principle” to hold a bilateral summit “at the suggestion of the American side.”
- Ushakov added that details are being worked out “together with our American colleagues.”
- The venue has been agreed “in principle,” but the summit’s location remains unspecified.
- Next week has been set as a target date.
Zelensky Calls for Meeting
Tens of thousands have been killed since Russia launched its military offensive on Ukraine in February 2022.
- Russian bombardments forced millions to flee their homes and destroyed large swaths of eastern and southern Ukraine.
- Putin has rejected multiple calls from the United States, Europe, and Kyiv for a ceasefire.
- At talks in Istanbul, Russian negotiators outlined hardline territorial demands if Ukraine wants Russia to halt its advance—calling for Kyiv to withdraw from territory it still controls and renounce Western military support.
- Moscow has repeatedly cast doubt on Zelensky’s legitimacy and ruled out a meeting between the two leaders until after the terms of a peace deal have been agreed.
U.S. Envoy’s Proposal Ignored
After U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met Putin in Moscow, the Russian side did not respond to a proposal for a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ushakov said the Russian side “left this option completely without comment.”
Zelensky Refreshes Call for Meeting
Earlier Thursday, Zelensky renewed his call for a meeting with Putin—asserting that it is the only way to make progress toward peace.
He wrote on social media that the “only way” to find real solutions is to have leaders meet.
He added that the timing and range of issues to be addressed need to be determined.
Zelensky’s Planned Discussions
Zelensky said Thursday morning that he planned to hold “several” conversations throughout the day, including with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as French and Italian officials.
National Security Advisors’ Communication
He added that there would also be communication at the level of national security advisors.
Key Demand from Ukraine
“The main thing is for Russia, which started this war, to take real steps to end its aggression,” Zelensky emphasized.
