Petrobras\’ Giant Platform Exceeds Capacity Three Months Ahead of Schedule in Búzios!

Petrobras’ Almirante Tamandaré platform hits maximum capacity ahead of schedule

Petrobras announced on Friday that its flagship production platform, the Almirante Tamandaré, achieved full capacity of 225 000 barrels per day three months early at the Búzios field in the pre‑saldos of the Santos basin.

Early production milestone

  • Maximum flow reached with only five of the eight planned production wells.
  • 179 days after production began in February.
  • Confirms expectation that Búzios will soon become the company’s largest producing field, surpassing Tupi in the same basin.

Baruzzi, director of Engineering, Technology and Innovation, noted: “We’ve reached another productivity level only possible in fields like Búzios.” She compared the platform’s capacity to the global average of about 150 000 barrels per day.

Future production outlook

Petrobras projects production at Búzios to exceed 1.5 million barrels per day by 2030, a target that ties into the company’s broader goal of raising average oil and gas output to the upper end of its 2025 forecast.

Field dimensions and capacity strategy

Búzios, discovered in 2010, is described as “gigantic”:

  • Thickness comparable to the height of the Pão de Açúcar.
  • Area roughly twice the size of the Baía de Guanabara.

Such magnitude has allowed Petrobras to pursue even larger production units.

Technologies for efficiency and decarbonization

  • Closed flare to reduce greenhouse‑gas emissions.
  • Heat‑recovery technologies that cut additional energy demand.

Consortium and future development

Five additional platforms are contracted and under construction for future production, including three high‑capacity units.

The Búzios consortium is composed of:

  • Petrobras, as operator.
  • PPSA, managing the production sharing contracts.
  • Chinese partners CNOOC and CNODC.
