Musk Announces Tesla’s Unrestricted Access to xAI Models

Elon Musk Refutes Claims About Tesla‑xAI Revenue Sharing

What the Wall Street Journal Report Stated

The WSJ alleged that Tesla plans to license xAI’s AI models for use in its Full Self‑Driving (FSD) software. It also said the startup would help build a voice assistant for Teslas and software for Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus.

Musk’s Response on X (formerly Twitter)

Musk posted:
“I haven’t read the WSJ story, but it’s not accurate.” He added: “Tesla has learned a lot from discussions with xAI engineers that have helped accelerate achieving unsupervised FSD, but there’s no need to license anything from xAI.”

He continued, describing xAI models as:

  • “Gigantic, containing, in compressed form, most of human knowledge.”
  • “Couldn’t possibly run on the Tesla vehicle inference computer.”
  • “We wouldn’t want them to.”

Background on xAI

Founded by Musk, xAI positions itself as a rival to OpenAI. Earlier this year, TechCrunch reported that in its $6 billion funding pitch, xAI proposed training its models on data from Musk’s companies—including Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, and X. The goal: to boost technology across all those enterprises.

Shareholder Concerns

Some Tesla shareholders have sued Musk for starting xAI, claiming it siphons talent and resources away from Tesla to a competing venture.
