Tony-nominated actress Montego Glover (“Memphis”) chatted about starring in the Broadway revival of Gypsy.”

Glover was recently named alternate for the role of Mama Rose, thus taking over on Sunday matinees, as well as any other performances in Audra McDonald’s absence.

Experience doing ‘Gypsy’

On her experience doing “Gypsy,” Glover shared, “It was exhilarating… a once in a lifetime feeling.”

Playing Mama Rose

Glover was drawn to playing Mama Rose for the following reasons. “I loved her complexity. She is witty, wise, ballsy, damaged, beautiful, touch, misguided, naive and smart,” she explained.

“I loved diving into all those parts of her,” she admitted.

Future plans

Regarding her future plans, Glover shared, “Work as always: the theatre, continued work in TV & film, voice-over in animation, narration, gaming, commercials. Maybe a concert or two. And a bit of downtime too. NYC is a perfect playground, and finding ways to relax are everywhere.”

Glover on her Tony nomination and Drama Desk win for ‘Memphis’

In 2010, Glover won the Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Actress in a Musical” for “Memphis,” and she was also nominated for a Tony for “Best Actress in a Musical” for her acting work in that same show.

“I’m incredibly honored. Being recognized for my work in this way is the kind of gift that lasts your whole life. I treasure that,” she acknowledged.

The digital age

On being an artist in the digital age, Glover said, “It feels fast! So much of the work of an artist moves very quickly now.”

“My day to day goal is to balance the pace of our world with the age old idea of ‘process.’ Those (sometimes long) stretches of time that are very necessary to making art…honoring and practicing that,” she said.

Advice for young and emerging actors

For young and aspiring actors, Glover responded, “My advice would depend on their age. In general: keep trying and keep going. Enjoy yourself. Read, read, read: novels, plays, short stories, and poetry.”

“Also see art: plays, musicals, visual art, dance, orchestras, opera, performance art, concerts, film and so forth. You can’t make art unless you actually experience it and support it,” she elaborated.

Success

Regarding her definition of success, she revealed, “Success, to me, means confidence in my work, my work ethic, and my abilities.”

“Also, being well-known and respected in my field for the work that I do,” she added.

Message for her fans and supporters

For her loyal fans and supporters, Glover expressed, “Thank you. Thanks for supporting me in so many wonderful, surprising ways and in every single place I’ve ever performed.”

“Thank you for supporting art and artists. Thank you,” she said, effusively.
