Business: How to improve interpersonal skills at work\” />
The ‘Gen Z stare’ is a term trending on TikTok that describes a blank, vacant stare that’s often seen on Gen Z faces—even at work. But what is this and what does it reveal about the emerging workforce?
The “Gen Z stare” refers to a perceived blank, often emotionless, expression that some younger individuals, particularly those in Generation Z (born 1997-2012), display when interacting with others, especially in service or social settings. This stare is often interpreted by older generations as a lack of social skills or rudeness, but Gen Z individuals sometimes view it as a more efficient way of communicating or a way to cope with repetitive or obvious questions.
If you have ever been met with a blank stare of boredom and indifference instead of a “Hi, how can I help?” you might have seen the Gen Z stare in action. If you are Gen Z yourself, you might be giving off that same expression without even realising it.
Peter Duris, CEO and Co-Founder of AI-powered career app Kickresume, has been reviewing this issue of workplace demographic divides. Dutis has shared his tips for younger employees looking to brush up on their soft skills, as well as suggestions for how businesses can foster better interpersonal communication at work.
Duris observes: “At first glance, the Gen Z stare may seem rude or unapproachable. But in many cases, it’s simply a sign that someone’s communication skills could use a bit of work. Younger employees, especially those who haven’t been in the workforce for long, may still be developing their interpersonal skills, which can come across as that now-famous blank stare.”
Focusing on the why, Duris says: “This is probably most obvious in customer service roles, where providing a pleasant and welcoming experience is a must. If younger workers often find it awkward and difficult to engage with customers and colleagues, it may be because they need support and guidance when it comes to improving their social skills.”
Duris presents the following tips for employees
Engage with your colleagues. It may sound obvious, but simply having more conversations with the people you work with can help improve your social skills, and in turn, your customer service skills. Using the FORD method (family, occupation, recreation, and dreams) you can have appropriate conversations with your team that can help improve your soft skills.
Practice having conversations with customers. If you’re in a customer-facing role like hospitality for example, try sparking up conversations with them. Ask customers how they’re doing or simply wish them a good day before they leave. These small acts can help you build up a rapport over time, leading to improved social skills.
Don’t underestimate the importance of greeting. Whether it’s to your colleagues in the office, or customers on the other side of the counter—a simple, “Hello, how are you today?” can go a long way. It can help customers feel welcomed, and it can initiate polite conversation with those around you.
There are also things that businesses can do to help their employees improve their interpersonal skills. Organizing social events and encouraging team-wide communication can help benefit some younger employees who may need a nudge to get involved.
Duris presents the following tips for managers
- Plan social events. Planning team socials helps create an environment where employees can chat in a relaxed setting, which can encourage them to open up and socialize more. This may help more reserved employees come out of their shell.
- Encourage team meetings. If your team doesn’t come together often, it may be time to change that. Team meetings don’t have to just be about work, it can be a chance for employees to connect and check in with each other. This may help improve communication across the team.
- One to one guidance. If you notice an employee struggling with their communication and social skills, it may be best to schedule a one-on-one chat to check in with them. They may not even be aware there’s an issue, so a private conversation is a great way to let them know.
