Digital Journal is partnering with Life Sciences Week 2025 as the official media partner for the event running September 22-26 in Edmonton and Calgary. The collaboration will frame Alberta’s life sciences developments as part of broader national and international conversations about research, commercialization, and investment.

The week-long program showcases researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers through events that span the Life Sciences Summit, panel discussions, industry tours, and pitch sessions. The event is designed to highlight how Alberta’s ecosystem is advancing commercialization and creating the conditions needed for growth.

Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API), one of Canada’s largest life sciences commercialization organizations, manages Life Sciences Week, alongside partners from across the province. The organization sees the media partnership as a way to elevate and showcase Alberta’s progress to the innovation ecosystem across the country.

“We’re thrilled to have Digital Journal taking part in Life Sciences Week,” said Andrew MacIsaac, CEO of API. “Something truly phenomenal is happening in the province, we’re seeing a tremendous momentum growing in the sector that is set to change the Life Sciences nation-wide for the better. We’re collaborating across the country and we can’t wait for Digital Journal to be part of capturing the excitement.”

This year’s agenda highlights how new technologies and capabilities are reshaping the sector.

Sessions will look at how artificial intelligence is being applied in health, Alberta’s manufacturing advantage, explore innovation in women’s health through a dedicated femtech program, and profile early-stage ventures in both Calgary and Edmonton through regional spotlight events. A Health Tech Showcase will feature companies demonstrating tools and technologies moving toward commercialization, while tours and open houses will give participants a closer view of research facilities and clinical programs.

Alberta’s life sciences sector gains scale and profile

Alberta’s life sciences sector is expanding in scale and impact.

According to BioAlberta’s 2025 delegation report, the industry now generates approximately $9.2 billion in annual revenue, supports more than 34,000 jobs, and contributes $4.7 billion to provincial GDP.

The ecosystem includes more than 1,900 companies and organizations. Small enterprises plan to add 1,800 jobs this year, a 44% increase in direct industry employment since 2022.

The sector’s global profile is also rising. The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is now ranked 38th in the world, jumping ten rankings year over year. Other significant investments are taking shape, such as the growth of the Life Sciences Campus in the Edmonton Research Park, which is anchored by Canada’s largest security of supply site, Critical Medicines Production Centre, and growing momentum from companies such as Future Fields, PulseMedica, and Entos.

The expansion of Calgary-based companies including Nanotess, NorthernRNA, Fluid Biomed, and more have been adding more fuel to the fire.

Digital Journal will provide on-the-ground reporting from the week’s events, capturing how discussions and announcements translate into opportunities for Alberta’s life sciences sector.

“Life Sciences Week brings together many parts of the ecosystem, and API plays a central role in building the conditions for life sciences to grow in Alberta,” says Chris Hogg, CEO of Digital Journal. “We’re excited to work alongside them to connect those stories through coverage, highlighting where commercialization is working, where challenges remain, and how Canadian opportunities are being shaped in real time.”

Coverage will spotlight how conversations around commercialization, investment, and talent emerge across sessions such as innovation showcases, policy discussions, and community mixers. It will also capture what those discussions signal for Canada’s presence in global health innovation.

Life Sciences Week 2025 runs September 22-26 in Edmonton and Calgary, with programming designed to showcase how Alberta’s ecosystem is connecting research to commercialization and unlocking new opportunities.
