Pakistan landslide kills 3, 15 missing after heavy rain
Monsoon Havoc Claims 221 Lives Across Pakistan
Since the monsoon banner unfurled late June, relentless rainstorms, landslides, flash floods, collapsed buildings and electrocution incidents have taken 221 lives nationwide.
Diambra Highways Trapped Vehicles
- Heavy rains triggered a landslide on a highway in Diambra district, Gilgit-Baltistan, swallowing at least 10 cars.
- Three bodies were recovered and 15 others remain missing.
- A rescue operation is underway while government teams cleared debris.
Touring The Peak of Disaster
Faizullah Faraq, the regional government spokesperson, confirmed that hundreds of visitors were rescued from the mountain road.
- Local villagers provided emergency shelter and assistance.
- Floods blocked major highways, damaged communication signals, and destroyed four bridges, a hotel, a school and 50 houses.
Nationwide Emergency
Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Agency reported 221 fatalities, including 104 children and 40 women, and more than 500 injuries.
Seasonal Shift in Impact
“Monsoon rains usually start late in the season, but this year the impact has been markedly different,” a spokesperson said.
Monsoon season delivers 70–80 % of South Asia’s annual rainfall, vital for agriculture, food security, and millions of farmers’ livelihoods. Yet it also brings widespread destruction.
Historical Context
In 2022, monsoon floods submerged a third of the country and killed 1,700 people.
